Airport and airport infrastructure design

We design runways, taxiways, and airport aprons for investments in Romania, including Oradea and Bihor, with solutions correlated to the reference aircraft and operating conditions.

Technical Guide: Airport Design and Airport Infrastructure — regulations, input data, and documentation.

Airport Design: from the reference aircraft to work phasing: a practical article for project preparation.

Airport design and the reference aircraft

We develop projects for the construction, expansion, and modernization of airport infrastructure by correlating operational requirements with aircraft fleet characteristics, forecast traffic, and site conditions. We analyze topographic and geotechnical data, existing infrastructure configuration, required capacities, and development scenarios. We establish design parameters based on aircraft dimensions, landing gear configuration, maneuverability characteristics, and the types of operations intended.

Runway and taxiway design

We define the geometry of runways, taxiways, fillets, and aprons, establishing widths, radii, widenings, longitudinal and transverse slopes, and vertical alignments. We verify paths by analyzing the surfaces swept by aircraft during maneuvers, monitoring the main landing gear movement, wheel clearance from pavement edges, and separation of aircraft extremities from obstacles. We correlate solutions with shoulders, runway and taxiway strips, safety areas, and relevant visibility conditions.

Aprons and parking stands

We configure parking stands and access paths in relation to the aircraft mix, entry and exit procedures, pushback or towing maneuvers, and ground handling requirements. We analyze spaces for ground support equipment, vehicle traffic, fueling and intervention access, and the separation of operational flows. We evaluate interferences between simultaneous maneuvers, jet blast effects, and the relationship with nearby buildings, facilities, and equipment to substantiate the configuration and any usage restrictions.

Airport pavement structures

We design the structural thickness of airport surfaces based on loads generated by aircraft, traffic distribution and frequency, subgrade characteristics, and environmental conditions. We establish the layer composition, materials, and connection solutions between new and existing surfaces. For rehabilitations, we correlate interventions with identified investigations and degradation. We design vertical grading, water collection, and drainage, ensuring flow continuity, pavement structure protection, and limiting water accumulation on operational surfaces.

Markings, signage, and lighting

We integrate markings, signage panels, and lighting systems into the airfield's geometric and operational configuration. We correlate their placement with taxi routes, holding positions, conflict points, and operating conditions, including low-visibility conditions, as applicable. We address interfaces with power supply, cable ducting, and control and monitoring systems, as well as constraints associated with CNS and meteorological equipment.

Documentation and phasing

We develop technical reports, calculation briefs, plans, profiles, execution details, specifications, and bills of quantities, corresponding to investment stages. We analyze work phasing, construction zone delineation, equipment access, and the maintenance of operational routes in coordination with the airport operator. We document temporary configurations, restrictions, and commissioning conditions, and provide technical assistance for the implementation of solutions, ensuring their compatibility with future maintenance and developments.

Site grading and drainage

We design airport pavement structures in relation to traffic loads and the bearing capacity of the subgrade. We integrate vertical grading, water collection and evacuation, markings, signage panels, and lighting, along with associated power and control systems. We prepare calculations, plans, profiles, execution details, specifications, and bills of quantities, correlated across specialties. We substantiate work phasing in relation to operational restrictions, work zone delineation, and safety, maintenance, and future development requirements.
