Expansion of the turning pads, stopway, and shoulders at Oradea Airport

The feasibility study for Oradea Airport analyzes the turn pads, stopways, and runway shoulders together. The objective is to adapt the movement area infrastructure to code letters D, E, and F aircraft by correlating geometry, maneuvers, lighting, and drainage.

Necessity analyzed in the study

The report identifies the geometric limitations of existing turn pads and the lack of adequate shoulders for the larger aircraft considered. The solution is supported by the analysis of maneuvers, clearances from the edge of paved surfaces, and airport infrastructure conditions.

Aircraft geometry and kinematics

The pads at the runway ends are analyzed for 180° turning maneuvers. The study correlates the cockpit path, the landing gear position, and the space occupied by the aircraft with the centerline markings and the edges of the paved surfaces.

The list of analyzed aircraft includes code C families and larger aircraft, such as the Boeing 777, Boeing 747, and Airbus A380. This allows for the evaluation of restrictive geometric situations for the proposed surfaces.

Highlights of the solution provided in the FS

  • 15 m shoulders on each side of the runway, for a total runway plus shoulder width of 75 m.
  • Enlargement of the turn pads at the runway ends and construction of the corresponding shoulders.
  • Stopway surfaces provided at both ends of the runway, each measuring 240 × 45 m.
  • Adaptation of markings and lighting systems to the new geometry.
  • Correlation of rainwater collection, sewage, and grading of adjacent surfaces.

Lighting and integration into existing infrastructure

The electrical installation drawing shows the positioning of centerline and edge lights in the 01 and 19 turn areas, in relation to the surface edges and runway systems. The report also addresses electrical power supply modifications, equipment adaptation, and the integration of the solution with existing infrastructure.

Contribution and design result

The Sky Meridian team's experience in this project includes design and consulting contributions during the feasibility study, as well as reviewing the lighting solution presented. These contributions concern the adaptation of airport infrastructure and the coordination of technical solutions for turn pads, stopway and shoulders.

The documented result is the feasibility solution for adapting the assembly of surfaces and systems. The dimensions and configurations above are those proposed in the documentation; final operating conditions will be established during the verification and authorization stages related to the investment.
