Aircraft compatibility: how to prepare the assessment for an aerodrome

Written by · Published on

Compatibility is assessed for a specific aircraft, on a defined route and in a defined operating configuration. Fitting within a runway width is not sufficient to demonstrate the safe use of taxiways, aprons, and airport services.

What data is required for the analyzed aircraft?

Identify the type and variant, manufacturer documentation, and its revision. Centralize the wingspan, length, tail height, wheelbase, OMGWS, gear geometry, and tire pressures. Specify effective weights and movement frequency, including their distribution across surfaces.

Describe the infrastructure's reference aircraft and the differences compared to the proposed aircraft. A commercial family name is not sufficient when variants have different dimensions or handling characteristics.

How is the full route verified?

Construct the route from the runway used to the parking position and back. Analyze turns, curves, junctions, and intermediate positions, not just an image of the aircraft in its final position. For towing, include the tug, the tow bar if applicable, and the space required for the ground crew.

Verify wheel trajectory, extremity clearance, separation from objects and other aircraft, as well as areas affected by jet blast. Proposed restrictions must be represented on plans and described in terms that can be applied in operations.

What checks complement the geometric analysis?

Examine surface bearing strength, their condition and composition, landing gear loads, and local conditions of use. The method and data for pavement classification must be identified; values from different systems should not be compared without justification.

Include ILS/CNS protection, OFZ and obstacles, RFFS availability, handling equipment, and the removal of a disabled aircraft. A weight or frequency limitation only solves the problems that the analysis demonstrates, not all incompatibilities.

When is ADR.OPS.B.090 relevant?

ADR.OPS.B.090 addresses the use by aircraft that exceed the code letter and/or OMGWS of the certified design characteristics. The operator must request prior approval from the authority for the situations stipulated by the requirement; there is an exception for aircraft emergency situations.

The compatibility report is the technical support for the process, not the approval itself. The scope of checks correlates with the certified configuration and other applicable operational requirements.

What must the report conclusion enable?

The conclusion identifies exactly the aircraft, routes, weights, maneuvers, and conditions assessed. Each measure has a responsible party, a verification method, and a review criterion. Changing the parking position, towing equipment, or ILS configuration may require a re-evaluation of the assumptions.

For quoting, send the aircraft documents, airport plans, certification basis, pavement strength data, and operational scenario. Specify whether occasional or regular operation is requested and which organizations are participating in the assessment.
